DID YOU COLLECT COINS AS A KID? And do you still have your collection? The years before 1965 were wonderful years for coin collectors. All dimes and quarters were made of silver, all pennies were made of copper, and you could find valuable coins fairly easily, in common circulation, if you knew the dates and mint marks that were worth money. And even kids could collect coins. The Whitman coin folders cost just 35 cents each when I was a kid, and they held pennies, nickels, dimes...all the American coins, in fact. And it wasnt too hard to fill that LINCOLN PENNIES 1941-PRESENT book with every penny issued in those years. (The 1909-1940 book, now that was a different story.) I do a podcast (radio show you can listen to anytime) about metal detecting, treasure hunting, and coin collecting, and the episode I just posted is about coin trivia. For example, did you know that the figure represented on the Indian head penny is the same as the one on the Mercury dime? Who was the first president to appear on common United States coins? The first non-president? How many ridges are on a dime? A quarter? And why arent there ridges on pennies and nickels? The show runs just four minutes, and I think the members of this group will enjoy it. You can listen to it right now at thetreasurecorner.
