DID YOU KNOW…….. A look back at early area history as found in the archives of the Enderlin Historical Society and Museum ……… by Susan Schlecht Museum website: enderlinmuseum.org The following article was found in the February 20, 1930 issue of The Enderlin Independent and seemed appropriate since basketball season is in full swing now. ************ COUNTY CAGE TOURNAMENT AT LISBON NEXT WEEK ------------ The consolidated school basketball tournament is bound to have some surprises in store when the girls and boys of Ransom county play off their annual contest Feb. 28 and March 1, at the Lisbon armory. Among the girls’ teams, Aliceton, Liberty and Elliott seem to be the outstanding teams although the others are not going to give up their places without a strong fight. Elliott and Aliceton played a tie game two weeks ago, and some time before that Liberty won from Aliceton. Elliott won the cup last year and has almost the same team again this year. So it will probably be hard going for anyone of the three that wins, to say nothing of the “dark horse” that might loom up. The boys’ tournament promises to be one of the best ever played on the armory floor. The Moore champions lost Daub and Dagman last year, but have two good men to fill their places. Casey has the same team as last year with the addition of Schultz. Elliott lost three men by graduation, but their places are also well filled. It is difficult to say which is the best team by comparing the scores. Fort Ransom beat Elliott, Casey beat Fort Ransom, and Elliott beat Casey, but not much can be judged from these games on account of the difference in the consolidated school floors. This we can say, however, there are at least four or five of the boys’ teams and three or four of the girls’ teams that are not conceding the cup to anyone. Sydna consolidated school is entering a team this year for the first time in several years and Cleveland is entering two teams for the first time. Englevale, Hanson, Sydna, and Cleveland have smaller enrollments than most of the schools so it is more difficult for them to develop a strong basketball team. The teams from these schools have been playing very good basketball, and it would not be a surprise if one of the teams enters the finals. Because of the large number of teams entered in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, the tournament will start early Friday morning. ********************* Sue’s Comments: Imagine the days when there were so many consolidated schools in Ransom County that they could hold their own basketball tournament! For many years each township had their own school and these schools included some type of gymnasium where the basketball games were played. (The Enderlin, Lisbon and Sheldon schools were not part of the consolidated system and had their own high school teams who competed in the statewide public school classified system.) The Lisbon armory which was to be the scene of this tournament was not the same armory as we know today. The early armory was located on the main street of Lisbon and was also a popular place for youth activities such as county-wide 4-H dances. Perhaps someone in the area has a picture of one of the basketball teams from the Moore or Liberty Consolidated School which they would like to share with the Independent or the Museum!
