The body needs cholesterol for internal and external cell membrane structure, hormone production, such as oestrogen, testosterone and adrenal hormones. Cholesterol produces bile acids which help the body to digest fats and absorb other important nutrients. It also promotes good body metabolism, this is essential for the production and use of vitamin D, which in turn is essential for the body’s use of calcium. High cholesterol can be damaging to your health. Some tips to help reduce cholesterol levels include trimming the fat off foods such as meat and chicken, eat fish regularly, loose body fat though a healthy diet and exercise. Exercise will help to increase HDL (good cholesterol) and lower LDL cholesterol. Substitute polyunsaturated fats, especially in take away foods, do as much home cooking as possible so that you know what goes in your food.
