The gut is our gatekeeper, and when its in good shape we feel great - but when its not, we could be pronte to all sorts of problems. The gut has over 100 trillion bacteria (flora) which can have positive and negative effects on a persons health. Good bacteria help metablize nutrients and protect the gut from harmful bacteria. On the other hand, if bad bacteria out-numbers the good, it can cause gas, bloating, and inflammation. It can even let harmful particles into the bloodstream. A diet high in fat, sugar, and processed foods can promote this bad bacteria. There is good news, though!! You can reset your gut bacteria, and swap out the bad for the good. Here are 4 things you can do to promote healthy microflora: 1) Choose food-based probiotics: Yogurt, fermented foods such as kefir, soy sauce, sauerkraut, etc. It is always better to try food before supplements 2) Eat plent of prebiotics: Whole grains, onions, garlic, leeks, arichokes, asparagus, and chicory root 3) Avoid fatty foods: Too much unhelathy fat can damange the lining of the intestines, which allows chemicals released by bad bacteria to leak into the bloodstream and cause inflammation in the tissue around it 4) Control stress: Stress alters the functioing of the immune system, which can change the makeup of your gut flora and cause a decrease in healthy bacteria.
