DID YOU KNOW? THIS IS THE LAST PART OF A BUDGET SESSION OF THE LEGISLATIVE STATE COUNCILS SPEECH BY HON. HILLY A. EWING, MEMBER FOR PROVIDENCIALES in 1974 (BEFORE THE 1976 POLITICAL PARTIES) It gives me the greatest privilege to stand here today in another Budget Session, it is the only privilege that we have to explain the situation of the Turks and Caicos Islands to the people. Mr. Speaker if you will permit me to say to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands that we will not achieve anything if we continue under this colonial system of Government. Mr. Speaker, I want to say to the people of today that except we be party-wise and have an opposition party and form our own Ministerial government and have our Portfolio such as our own Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Minister of Finance, Minister of Works, Minister of Trade, Minister of Tourism, etc. Mr. Speaker, I want to say that we as elected members are the foreseen eyes of the people and we are the ones to see the danger and to guide them. I know that my colleagues are well aware of what have been thrown continually in our faces that we are living off tax payers money, and this is one of the main things that we want to get rid of, but so to speak that the tax payers do carry most every cent back to London where it comes from. But this we will like to say, that we are aware of our neighbouring country and other parts of the world that they only prosper when they realize that the colonial system of Government did not mean they any good, and this is the same position that we are facing with today; except we fight as man and man together, we will be here, our life time and reach no further than a set of poor pauperise people. we are talking about development everyday, but except we decide to stand like men and to realize our responsibility advantage would continually be taken of us. There is little progress that take place in Blue Hills since last year such as the new elementary school, the pier that is under construction and the resurfacing of the Blue Hills road. But Mr. Speaker, it is not enough done to satisfy me, but I look forward to the future to see that the old school be transformed into offices such as post offices, clinic, Library, space for dentist chair, and a recreation center hall. Also I look forward to see a Police accommodation and prison cell, and a suitable court house. Resurfacing of Five Cays road, this I have been asking for over a year ago. I cannot continue to agree with such things like this, not wearing the patience of the honoured guest, but Mr. Speaker allow me to say one more thing especially to the people of my constituents. I promised them that I will be faithful and I will fight to the end so there will be no peace till the battle is ended and I hope that their eyes will be open when victory wins this crown.
