DID YOU KNOW: When a passenger plane crashes at an airport or in the near by community, the difference between life and death for its passengers and crew is often determined by the response of the skilled firefighters. The #SanBernardinoRegionalEmergencyTrainingCenter (SBRETC) was created to fulfill the comprehensive training needs of the aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) community. #SBRETC offers live fire training for all levels of #ARFF, including recertification training with live fires for index A-E airports, initial certification training for airport firefighters and or municipal firefighters, and the State of California Fire Control 5 course. The 15-acre state of the art, training site in #SanBernardino, CA, features a 125’ diameter pit with a full mockup of a 727 aircraft. The pit is fueled by liquid propane at rates up to 1200 gallons per minute. A specialized aircraft fire trainer (SAFT) meets all the needs of index A or B airports. The trainer offers wheel and brake fires, number 1 and 2 engine fires, cockpit fires, cargo bay fires, interior passenger compartment fires and victim rescues. The training building has two state of the art classrooms, an observation facility, restrooms with showers and personal lockers. The live fire training is recorded through four high end video cameras, and then the recorded DVD of the training is provided to the students. The training record can be used for future critiques and becomes a permanent record for the #FAA if needed. There are also three static aircraft including a complete Boeing 727 used for training including victim rescue, over wing exit practice and rescue, door operations and cockpit shutdown. SBRETC also has a driver trainer Emergency Vehicle Operators Course for student drivers. The training vehicle used is a new #Rosenbauer3000 with both a snozzle and Rhino bumper turret. Training courses have been conducted for ARFF departments throughout the U.S. and #Canada. Comments from past participants included: • “I have been to various Fire Service Training institutions both across Canada and in the U.K. I can truthfully say my experience in San Bernardino was world class! The training site was breathtaking, incorporating state of the art technology combined with the expertise of a well seasoned and friendly staff.” Steve Davies, Supervisor YVR Emergency Response Services – #Vancouver, Canada • “The professionalism and energy level displayed by the San Bernardino Regional Emergency Training Center was both refreshing and stimulating. The class included specialized training, aircraft familiarization, tactics and strategy including approach, fire attack with hand lines, safety and communication. The knowledge and experience gained has improved my skills and will be put to good use as an ARFF team member.” Javier Marquez, Firefighter/Paramedic/ARFF Team #SantaMonicaFireDepartment The SBRETC is a joint powers agreement with #CraftonHillsCollege, #SBCoFD and #SBCFD. In addition to the $12.5 million from a Federal Aviation Administration grant over $1 million was provided from the three collaborating organizations.
