Understanding the Bible Musterion 5 The gospel of the mystery was entrusted to the Apostle Paul for believers in the dispensation of grace. Way back at the beginning of the dispensation of the law God did exactly the same when He entrusted the law to Moses to give to Israel. The Gospel of today cannot be found in the four Gospels or in the teaching and preaching of the apostles. It was not known at that time. It was still a “mystery”. The Bible says it was "hidden in God" (Ephesians 3:9). It was Paul who referred to the gospel for the first time as the gospel of the grace of God. "But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God." (Acts 20:24). The gospel of the kingdom had twelve apostles because it was a good news for Israel (the twelve tribes). The revelation of the mystery only had one apostle because Jesus Christ revealed the mystery only to one Apostle, namely Paul. Paul refers to the unique gospel in different ways that he received from Christ. He for example refers to it as "the gospel of the uncircumcised (Gentiles) to distinguish it from the other gospel of the kingdom which was also preached among the Jews at that time. "But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision (gentiles) was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision (Jews) was unto Peter" (Gal 2:7). When Paul writes about the receiving of the gospel of the mystery he wrote in the singular. When he writes about preaching the gospel of the mystery he writes in the plural. There were people like Barnabas, Silas and Timothy who assisted him with the preaching of the “gospel of the mystery”. Notice how clear it is emphasized in the following verse : " ... and when they perceived the grace given to me (singular) James and Cephas and John who were reputed to be pillars gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship that we (plural) would go to the Gentiles(us) and they to the circumcision " (Gal 2:9).
