DISGUSTING! (Warning! This post is not for the faint of heart.) Isaiah 64 describes the lowly condition of mankind. In verse 6 it says, "But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags" What most do not realize is that when it speaks of being "unclean" here it is referring to someone who was ceremonially unclean, like someone who had a terrible disease. According to the law, they were unfit, not good enough to enter into the temple or participate in the worship service. The "filthy rags" that it compares our righteousness to, are actually pieces of cloth that women would use during their monthly period/cycle. There is no one good enough based on our own merit, to ever make it to heaven but the bible tells us that Jesus, who never sinned, became sin and bore the punishment that we deserve. He took on our dirty, filthy unrighteousness and exchanged it with His perfect spotless righteousness. When God the father saw the "unrighteousness" on Jesus he poured out His wrath and judgement on Him on Calvary so that when God looks at us he sees the "righteousness" that Jesus gave us in return. Make that exchange.
