DISPLACEMENT ACTIVISTS! ORGANIZERS! RADICAL FOLKS WHO WANT TO MAKE STUFF HAPPEN! [Save the Date! Invite rad groups and individuals! Spread the word!] Lets get together to fight displacement! Get a fast-paced primer on strategies and tactics! Identify priority campaigns for Seattle! Share skills! Strengthen ties with folks and groups so that we can all become more effective! Its urgent. Heres why: Seattle is the fastest-growing city in the country, in terms of both population and rents (this is not just Seattle proper—its the entire metropolitan area). The signs are written in construction pits, on eviction notices, in our bills, and in the King County Jail Register. We see it on the sides of roving U-Hauls and in the loopholes left open for big business and banks. If we actually wanted and could afford a Google Glass, sure, wed see it in there, too. Seattle is at the bleeding edge of the rising rents and homelessness that are now pushing people out of cities around the country (and around the world). This is the aftermath of massive foreclosures and evictions that have already gutted the City. As activists, we are all waging battles: battles for affordable housing and living wages; battles to exist in public places; battles to survive the winter; battles for land and water and clean air. We could all use more knowledge, strength, and support. We recognize that it is now urgent for activists across the city get together to fight against this tide of displacement and oppression. How Seattle handles these critical problems could set the tone for places worldwide where the people recognize that its not just the rich who have a right to the city, or just basic human rights like housing.
