DIY Mascara Mascara dates back to ancient Egypt. Most formulas - TopicsExpress

DIY Mascara Mascara dates back to ancient Egypt. Most formulas contain the same basic elements: pigmentation, oils, and waxes, but they also contain plenty of other nasty “stuff”. Cosmetics are very loosely regulated by the FDA. There is a great deal of freedom for the beauty industry in the formulation of cosmetics. Allergenic reactions are common with mascara users, so why not make your own with natural ingredients? The store bought mascara is expensive - $6.99 for about a quarter of an ounce. ($27.96 an ounce or $447.36 a pound) . So why not make your own. I’ve been on a “make your own” kick for many years now, so why not homemade mascara? I have found a recipe that does a great job of darkening, separating, and conditioning my lashes. And I don’t wake up in the morning with “raccoon eyes” The recipe is really easy. The hardest part is getting it into the blasted tube. I think I may invest in a syringe because it would be it much easier to get the mascara into the small tube. What you’ll need: 2 tsp coconut oil 4 tsp aloe vera gel 1/2 - 1 tsp grated bees wax 1 – 2 capsules of activated charcoal (for black) or cocoa powder (for brown) a clean mascara container . Directions: 1. Put coconut oil, aloe vera gel, and grated bees wax in a small saucepan (or double boiler) over low heat. Stir until beeswax is completely melted. 2. Open 1 – 2 capsules of activated charcoal (depending on desired color, about 1/4 – 1/2 tsp) OR ¼ - ½ tsp. raw cocoa and pour into oil mixture. Stir until completely incorporated. Remove from heat. Depending upon whether you want black or brown mascara, use either activated charcoal or raw cocoa powder. 3. Pour into a small plastic bag, pushing the mixture down to one corner. Then cut a very small hole in the opposite corner of the bag and squeeze into a used, clean mascara tube. Note: Due to temperature differences you may want to add more beeswax to give more “hold” to your mascara. I lived in Las Vegas when I first made my own mascara and I increased (after trial and error) the beeswax to 1/2 tsp. Now that I live in the Midwest I only use ½ tsp. of beeswax. Also, keep in mind that coconut oil is a liquid above 75 degrees. Where to get activated charcoal? It can be found in most health food stores or online. This is not the same stuff you use to get your grill going.
