DJ Kent is KING! 5 good reasons why we call him King Kent DJ Kent… Since the dawn of time, (sometime in 2006 to be exact), the loyal citizens of South Africa and lands beyond have converged ever week to pay homage and listen intently to one of the greatest kings of our time. Without fail at 6PM when the traffic is dense and the night is nigh Sir Fresh, first of his name of house 5FM, introduces his royal highness, Sir King Kent! As the applause and cheers make way for the royal offering, ears pucker and hearts flutter as they know; it’s time for the Ultimix @ 6! For a solid eight years and counting, DJ Kent has been thrilling and mesmerizing music lovers the world over with his intricate technique, effortless mixing and flawless track selection every Friday evening on South Africa’s premium youth radio station, 5FM. The mild mannered DJ knows no limits when it comes to his creativity and sheer brilliance which is why he remains perched firmly atop the musical totem pole and there’s no bringing him down. 1. He brings out the worst in you: From the moment King Kent presses the flashing green play button on a pair of Pioneer CDJs you know there’s nothing left but for your body to give way to stank faces, the opening of circles then entering said circles and all round involuntary foot tapping and head bobbing. You simply can’t help but want to bust some sort of move – two left feet or not. 2. His mixing is borderline sorcery: You love the Ultimix @ 6 but just like a million other adoring fans you believed King Kent couldn’t do it live… then he did. DJ Kent lives for the saying, “Never miss a beat”. The David Blaine of DJs knows just where to drop an acapella while introducing a reprise looped with a drum tool over a hip hop beat… and this is just his intro. 3. DJ Kent gets booked in Brakpan: There’s an effortless crossover appeal that’s attached to DJ Kent. From H20 to Thembisa Festival with a little bit of Oppikoppi in between, there’s no place DJ Kent won’t go and isn’t loved. It’s also widely believed that Eugene Terreblanche had an episode or two of the Ultimix @ 6 on his iPod Nano. 4. He doesn’t do interviews. Think about it for a second. When last did you see or read a DJ Kent interview? It’s ok. We’ll wait. 5. Like Pharrell Williams, he doesn’t get old : We crunched the numbers and theoretically DJ Kent has dropped over 400 mixes at 5FM throughout his eight year period at the station! Despite that massive figure, we simply can’t get enough of King Kent and it doesn’t seem like he’ll be stopping any time soon. King Kent likes to address his Kingdom every weekent!
