(DM) After living through a few excruciating debates in the last - TopicsExpress

(DM) After living through a few excruciating debates in the last several days, Ill like to say a couple things to my fellow skeptics: Acting like an arrogant, condescending ass does not advance your argument. It just makes you seem like a jerk. If your argument is so weak that you need to advance it by belittling everyone else...get a better argument. Im not saying we should all approach arguments like Mr. Rogers (although I love Mr. Rogers), Im just saying theres really no good reason for endless withering comments that make you sound like a movie villain (You fools! You can never comprehend my massive intellect! Bwahahaha!) On a similar note, admitting you are wrong will not hurt your perceived credibility. In fact, what is smarter than saying Holy shit! I didnt know that! Well, that evidence shows that I was probably wrong/clearly wrong/need to look into it more? Nothing. It is certainly not more clever to cling desperately onto your point after it has been taken apart, or to insult everyone and leave when you have lost an argument. Being right all the time teaches you nothing. If you cant admit to being wrong and thank others for correcting/informing you, think about what you are losing. And on that note, its much easier to graciously say you are wrong if you havent spent the entire conversation acting like a smug know-it-all. Happy debating!
