DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH GUNS IN YOUR CHURCH…? By Police Officer and Minister Jimmy Meeks From time to time I hear from church members a detailed account of how many armed people are in their congregation on any given Sunday. “Jimmy,” some will say, “even our preacher is armed.” And sometimes the list doesn’t stop there: “...All of our deacons are armed and even quite a few of our members...” Take an imaginary journey with me into a scenario that I hope you never encounter… Suppose that 350 people show up at your church this Sunday. Let’s imagine that of those 350, twenty-five (25) of them are armed. About 30 minutes into the service, an armed killer stands up in the middle of the sanctuary. He manages to fire off a round or two before your 25 can respond - but they DO respond... When the smoke clears, however, you have a nightmare on your hands. The killer is dead, but so are an additional 10 of your members. To make matters even worse, you will soon learn that the 10 who perished were NOT shot by the killer, but by different ones of YOUR 25… You have a problem…. Over the next week, you will have to conduct 10 funerals. In addition to that, your church soon learns that lawsuits are being filed. Longtime members move their membership elsewhere. Before long, the finances of your church are drained... Do not misunderstand me. I am all FOR the right to carry. And if your state allows you to carry a weapon into a church, so be it. But there is a much deeper issue at stake here... It has been said that the best way to deal with a bad guy with a gun is by a good guy with a gun. And you had that - 25 times over. But the consequences are painful… I have a question for you: if you allow everyone to carry, WHAT IS YOUR PLAN SHOULD AN ACTIVE KILLER START SHOOTING? Here’s another question: if you allow everyone to carry, are you conducting REGULAR TRAINING SESSIONS for them as to how you want them to respond? Very, very, very few people who are allowed to legally carry are PRACTICING or TRAINING on a regular basis. In once heard Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman say, “People do not rise to the occasion; they sink to the level of their TRAINING.” And don’t get religious in your answer: “Jimmy, the Lord will help us defeat the bad guy, just as he helped David defeat Goliath…” I’m glad you mentioned David… David did NOT conquer Goliath solely because the Lord was with him. David’s victory was a combination of factors, one of which was God Presence. But, the other reason that David triumphed was because he was TRAINED... In Psalm 144:1 David declared: “Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who TRAINS my hands for war and my fingers for battle…” David was ready. He had been TRAINING for years. He had mastered the art of the slingshot and knew just what to do. David’s confidence was not just religious in nature; it was also rooted in common sense. It is the trained, David knew, that win battles. You could put it like this: David had a HEART that was TRUSTING because he had a HABIT of TRAINING. If you have a congregation of armed people, you had better have a PLAN. And hopefully, you are PRACTICING that plan so that when the enemy comes, your people will know what to do. Is it not somewhat disturbing that our church musicians spend more time preparing every week than our safety teams do? If they mess up in their singing, a few will blush, others giggle, but either way, its no big deal. But if your safety team fails - there will be hell to pay for a very ...very ... very ... long time... When the killer starts shooting, chaos will break loose. There will be screams and shrills. You will feel the heat of the bullets as they pass by. Blood will spurt from bodies like water fountains. There will be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for years to come... It will not be like Hollywood, where, a few minutes later everyone seems to be ok... To give you a small sample of what you will hear, click on the video below to hear an actual shooting that took place in a church. It only lasted about 20 seconds, but 15 were shot, and 5 of them died. (Please note: the killer shouted “This is War” when he entered. You will hear those words in the clip, however, an actor says them. The gunfire you hear, and the singing, is for real). I BEG YOU… START TRAINING… TODAY….
