DO YOU KISS YOUR DOG??? A recent research article in the Journal of Small Animal Practice in 2014 by A.Di Bello DVM may change your mind. It is entitled , CROSS SPECIES TRANSMISSION OF PERIODONTITIS Periodontal disease is common in dogs and bacterial agents play a large role in its cause. In humans, periodontal disease is commonly caused by a group of bacteria commonly called the red complex bacteria. When samples were collected from the mouths of 73 dogs, 49.3% of the the samples demonstrated 2 of the bacteria in the red complex bacteria group. (Tannerella forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis). These bacteria were significantly correlated with the presence of periodontal disease. It is possible that transmission of oral bacteria can occur between humans and dogs. We all love our dogs BUT this article warns us that kissing them near the mouth can cause dental disease, and Doggie Breath in people. Dr.L
