DO YOU KNOW THAT? Your visit to Lagos is incomplete without riding on the 11.8 km long bridge across the Lagos lagoon called the 3rd mainland bridge. The Third Mainland Bridge is the longest bridge in Nigeria and was the longest in Africa until 1996, when the 20.5km long 6th October Bridge in Cairo was completed. Its official name is Ibrahim Babangida Bridge. FACTS ABOUT 3RD MAINLAND BRIDGE It is the third of three bridges connecting Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria to the mainland, the other two being the Eko and Carter bridges. The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and Commissioned by former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida in 1990. It was built to ease heavy traffic previously experienced on Carter and Eko Bridges. It has a total length of 11.8 km. It has eight lanes. Commuters reported that the Bridge was vibrating noticeably; as a result, remedial work was done on portions of the bridge at different times, leading to partial closure of the bridge at different times. .
