DOING THE JOB...... The early rise of Hulk Hogan. ~Throughout The Hulksters career he has worked in many different places, AWA, the WWF, Japan and WCW among others. Hogan is another guy with the negative stigma of never jobbing or always winning. He paid his dues, as this post hopefully, clearly shows. This is more about showcasing Hulks early journey, which would lead into the birth of Hulkamania, but thats for another post. OCTOBER 18 1977 – Tampa, FL: Super Destroyer vs. Jerry Brisco (result unknown) OCTOBER 22 1977 – Lakeland, FL - Civic Center Charlie Cook defeated Super Destroyer NWA SOUTHEASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING/Jarrett-Welch Wrestling (CWA/Memphis) NOTE-Under the wrestling name Terry Boulder Hulk would capture the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight title from Ox Baker in February of 1979. MAY 6 1979, Pensacola FL, Andre The Giant defeated Terry Boulder. Rumor has it these two first faced off in September 1978, however there is no confirmed date or result available. The second match between these two is rumored to have taken place on April 26 1979, however again, no confirmed result. This is their third ever bout. NOTE-In MAY 1979, Terry The Hulk Boulder teamed with Jerry The King Lawler to beat Austin Idol & Professor Toru Tanaka MAY 14 1979 – Memphis, TN - Mid-South Coliseum (attendance: 5,300): Terry The Hulk Boulder defeated AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion The Mongolian Stomper by disqualification when Gorgeous George Jr interfered......youtu.be/9cKJdX0y6Ns NOTE-On MAY 25 1979 in Dothan, AL at the Houston County Farm Center: NWA World Champion Harley Race beat Terry The Hulk Boulder by reverse decision. Terry appeared to have won the NWA World Championship, but the decision was voided when Terry was discovered to have thrown Race over the top rope during the match (according to a fan in attendance, during the match the referee was knocked down, Boulder backdropped Race over the top rope. As Boulder suplexes Race back into the ring, a second referee comes out, sees the pin and makes the count. While everyone is on there feet going crazy first ref comes back in and disqualifies Boulder for the over the top rope throw and gives the belt back to Harley. WWFA/Anglo Asian Wrestling Federation NOVEMBER 13 1982 – Sun City, South Africa: Hulk Hogan beat Terry Funk; according to Hogan, when he went up to the promoter to get paid (the money was to be wired to his account, $70k) a bunch of guys put him in the backseat of a car, and held a gun to his head. they told him either he goes to the air port and lives, or they give him the money and kill him --- he said the guy in the front seat would spin the barrel of the gun, and every ten minutes or so, would pull the trigger at Hogan; so they let him out at the airport, and he called Funk and told him not to ask for money or he wouldnt get out alive. AMERICAN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION AWA Champion Nick Bockwinkel defeated Hulk Hogan via reverse decision/D.Q. Hogan originally wins title.
