DON BYAS - PERDIDO Don Byas, saxophone tenor Teddy Buckner, trompette Claude Gousset, trombone Michel de Villers, saxophone Sammy Price, piano Arvell Shaw, contrebasse J. C. Heard, batterie Don Byas - (October 21, 1912 - August 24, 1972) One of the greatest of the tenor giants. Carlos Wesley Don Byas was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma. A jazz ex-pat, he spent the last 26 years of his life in Europe and therefore isnt as well known to American audiences as he otherwise would have been. He started gigging at 17 with bands like Bennie Moten, playing clarinet. In the 30s he moved to Los Angeles and picked up the tenor sax, playing with Lionel Hampton’s band at the Paradise Club among others including Buck Clayton, Don Redman, Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk, and Count Basie. He was a regular at Mintons Playhouse in Harlem and was one of the bebop vanguard. JAZZ Love
