DONT PANIC. You may be aware that I have plans to retire from Zaphods, but please be assured that I am going to work hard for the club to continue on, if at all possible. In the meantime, here is a smattering of feedback Ive gotten. Steven Bowser (Facebook) A true gift to this city. Thanks for everything Eugene. Sincerely. Charlie Angus (Facebook) (Member of Parliament) I have known Eugene since the days of Ottawas punk scene and the awesome Underground bar. I have played Zaphods many times. Eugene has never been just a bar owner. He loves promoting culture and engaging people to come together. Love you Eugene Haslam -- youre a prince in my books. S/Sgt. Kal Ghadban (Twitter) (Ottawa Police Service) I really hope the right people can continue the incredible history that @zaphods_ottawa has created. @EugeneHaslam my friend, u r a pioneer. Mike St-Jean (Facebook) Cut my teeth in almost every way at Zaphods Ottawa. Thanks Eugene for providing a safe and inclusive ecosystem for the growth of more than a generation of music, artists and anyone looking for something new in Ottawa. Alyssa McDonald (Facebook) Zaphods is legendary and will always be my favourite bar in Ottawa. In my opinion, everything is just a little bit more fun under those blue lights! Anyways, hope that it will still be there for my visits back home... Ottawa wouldnt be the same without it! Michael Mazur (Twitter) Im from Michigan. I spent 2013 summer doing an internship in Ottawa and@zaphods_ottawa was ALWAYS where I met the best folks and had fun Aymay Elizabeth (Facebook) Dear Mr. Haslam, Like the numerous posts above me, and surely the posts soon to follow mine, my deepest thanks and gratitude to you for giving life to that hallowed place, Zaphod Beeblebrox. I grew up feeling different. Like I did not belong. Like I had no place. I had a love for music because it spoke to my feelings and made me feel less alone. After being introduced to what Ive always lovingly referred to as the Phods, it was apparent to me that the love affair would be eternal and strong. See, at Zaphods, I felt like I belonged. At Zaphods I felt safe. At Zaphods, I could be who I was without fear. I could dance the night away, sit on the holodeck, or chat with my friends in a place with people who loved discovering new music just as much as I did. The drinks were always cold and yummy. The music was always loud. The line was always worth the wait. I do hope someone worthy carries the torch for the many other young people who, like I did so many years ago, felt that Zaphods was (and always will be) so much more than just a bar. It was home. Thank you wont suffice, but its all I have and I give it to you. My sincere gratitude, Amy Stefan Breton (Facebook) Zaphods is part of a very select group of clubs in North America... Very few last this long and even fewer have such an exceptional profile as this one. Let me remind everyone that Zaphods is now a Canadian cultural landmark. I hope that Eugene will stay on as a consultant for at least a year with the new management. Running a successful club is so much more than simply cashing the money... Its a lifestyle which is not for the faint at heart as well as a real labour of love. Olivier Martin (Facebook) I have lots of good memories of Zaphods and the longest running industrial night (every Tuesday). It will be sorely missed. Jay Earle (Facebook) Not sure what comes next, but I have to say Zaphods has ALWAYS been my favourite venue/club/spot in Ottawa. Im pretty bummed out that I havent been able to go there as much as of late. Thank you so much Eugene Haslam for all the awesome memories and everything youve done for the music scene in Ottawa. Tall Trees (Twitter) Cannot begin to express our love for @zaphods_ottawa and @EugeneHaslam. We just played there tonight, and it goes without saying that...@zaphods_ottawa has become one of our favourite places to play. It is so full of music history and has put Ottawa on the map. We are.... deeply honoured to call it home. @zaphods_ottawa & @EugeneHaslam, sending all our love. We can only hope to give as much love as you have
