DON’T MISS THE BUS: TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE FOR AMISH TOUR The Union County Historical Society still has tickets remaining for a full day bus tour on Saturday, July 13th. This is a ticketed Union County Bicentennial event that will trace the first permanent settlement of the Amish in the Buffalo Valley in 1835. This tour is in an air-conditioned chartered bus with restroom facilities and will cover the area of Buffalo Valley that was first settled by Amish families. The tour guide is Don Carpenter, formerly of Vicksburg, and an authority of the early Amish community here. Nearly seventy sites and events will be discussed by Carpenter as the day progresses. Tour participants will learn about “Bad Betsy,” the unsigned letter, the forbidden photograph, and the story of the Amish deacon and the Presbyterian minister who took Holy Communion together. The bus will stop briefly at the site of the Leroy Massacre. A recently discovered letter, written from Lancaster County to Switzerland, in 1755, details this event. The tour will also stop at the ancient Shively Homestead from the 1770s Dunkard settlement in White Springs and see where pioneer ingenuity was manifested in creating a door with wooden hinges. The tour will depart at 8:30 AM from the Weis parking lot on Route 15, Lewisburg. The group will break for a noon lunch, individually ordered off the menu, at Carriage Corner Restaurant in Mifflinburg and will continue for the afternoon, returning by about 4:30 PM to the point of departure. The cost is $30 per person and must be paid for in advance at the Union County Historical Society located in the Union County Courthouse at 103 South Second Street, Lewisburg, open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM-noon and 1-4:30 PM. Checks should be payable to: UNION COUNTY BICENTENNIAL. For more information call 524-8738. These and other events are featured at UnionCounty200 along with the Union County Bicentennial Shop for special memorabilia.
