DON’T THROW JESUS UNDER THE BUS! November 11 I Peter 2: 1-3 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation - if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. “Just a closer walk with thee, grant it Jesus is my plea. Daily walking close to thee, Let it be dear Lord let it be.” Don’t you love that song? It should be every born again Christian’s song. This should be our prayer. Gandhi said, “I like your Jesus very much. I just don’t like Christians.” Think about that. How could that be? Aren’t Christians by their very name supposed to be like Christ? I believe the world has the same sentiments as Gandhi. The decline in our churches is not because we have too much Jesus, but because the world doesn’t see much of Jesus in the church anymore. I’ve heard it said jokingly, “If you find a perfect church, don’t join it because it wouldn’t be perfect anymore.” We say that jokingly but we know it’s true. It is sad what is going on in some churches today. It should break our hearts. I feel pretty sure it breaks our Lord’s heart. Let’s be honest, me included. We, as the church, have let our Lord down. A lot of people say they don’t go to church because of all the hypocrites. Just an excuse or do they make a valid point? A young family man I would see around the community I pastored told me once why he declined all my invitations to bring his family to church. He said, “I’ll be honest with you. When I go into the hardware store and see those old men sitting around the coal burning stove, they’re always running down the pastor and talking about all the problems in the church. I already have enough problems, why should I go to church for more problems. And one of them I’m sure is one of your deacons.” I’m sorry is about all I could say. I really am sorry. We don’t even realize that it’s Jesus we are throwing under the bus. In closing, I’ve heard it said, “It’s better to go to church with hypocrites on Sunday than to spend eternity in hell with them forever.” Rev. Lewis Forsythe
