DOST invites graduating high school students in CL to take the 2015 SEI college scholarship exam BY: CARLO LORENZO J. DATU Friday 1st of August 2014 CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, August 1 (PIA) -- Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is inviting graduating high school students in Central Luzon who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering to take the 2015 undergraduate scholarship exam of the Science Education Institute (SEI) which is scheduled on September 21. SEI offers two types of scholarships namely Program A or the RA 7687 Scholarship Program and Program B or the Merit Scholarship Program. “Program A is for students who belong to families with low socio-economic status while Program B is for students who belong to families with higher socio-economic status” DOST Regional Director Victor Mariano said. Among the privileges that DOST-SEI scholars enjoy include tuition and school fees subsidy, textbooks and school supplies allowance, physical education uniform allowance, free transportation for one economy-class round trip fare between permanent residence and the place of study on reimbursement basis (for those studying outside their place of permanent residence), monthly living allowance, group health and accident insurance, additional privileges during summer (if required by the curriculum), and post-graduation clothing allowance. Eligible to take the scholarship exam are natural-born Filipino citizens who are in the upper five percent of their graduating class or a member of the graduating class of a SEI-identified/Department of Education-recognized science high school and for Program A applicants- a resident of the municipality/city where he/she currently lives for the last four years as attested by the barangay captain. Applicants must also have no pending applications as immigrant to any foreign country; in good health; of good moral character; and have not previously taken the SEI college scholarship exam or any post-secondary/undergraduate course. Those who are interested and qualified are advised to submit the following to the nearest DOST office on or before August 22: a) fully accomplished information sheet, b) fully accomplished family information questionnaire (for Program A applicants), c) certificate of good moral character, d) certification that applicant belongs to the upper five percent of the graduating class or the applicant belongs to the graduating class of DOST-SEI identified or DepEd recognized science high school, e) statement of applicant that he/she has not taken any undergraduate or post secondary course, f) statement of parent that applicant has no pending application as immigrant to any other country, g) certificate of residency (for Program A applicants), h) two recent identical 1X1 ID pictures, i) photocopy of birth certificate, j) photocopy of parents’ income tax return for CY 2012 or original copy of tax exemption from the Bureau of Internal Revenue if parents are non-tax filers, k) latest three consecutive months electric bill for the year 2013 and l) a non-refundable testing fee of P200 for Program B applicants. The SEI undergraduate scholarship exam is an aptitude test designed to measure the scientific ability, quantitative ability, mechanical and technical ability, linguistic ability, imagery, inspection, working memory, sensorimotor ability and non-intellective ability of the applicants. It will simultaneously be conducted in over 70 venues nationwide including the provinces Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales.
