DOUBTING THE WILAYAT OF THE MASUM Whether people believe or not that the Star descended at the door of Imam Ali, one event is sure – that a stone descended from the sky, instantly killing a Nasibi. I have not come across any denial, dispute or debate about this event. Perhaps people fear that a stone will descend on them if they raise any dispute. Actually this happened not once but on two occasions to two different people about which two different verses were revealed. On the first occasion it was Hars ibn Omer Fahri who was killed by the stone that fell from the sky and in the second instance it was Numan bin Hars Fahri. THE FIRST INCIDENT : In Kaāfi, Abu Baseer, a Siqa narrator who was also the companion of Imam al Bāqir (s) and Imam al Sādiq (s), is quoted as saying: “When Imam Ali (s) came, the Prophet (s) said: ‘O, Ali. (s) There are similarities between you and Isa ibn Maryam (a.s). Had there been no apprehension that some groups from my community will attribute to you that which the Nazarenes attribute to Jesus son of Mary, I would have disclosed such wonderful things about you as would have made my community collect the dust of your feet from the land that you tread, and preserve it as a blessing and Grace’. These words of the Prophet (s) enraged the two Bedouins [Abu Bakr and Omer], Mughira bin Sha`aba and some others and they said: “This Prophet (s) is not content unless he equates his cousin [Ali ibn Abi Talib (s)] with Jesus son of Mary” At that moment Allāh revealed: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيم وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوْمُكَ مِنْهُ يَصِدُّونَ {57} وَقَالُوا أَآلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ أَمْ هُوَ ۚ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلًا ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُونَ {58} [ “When (Jesus) the son of Mary is held up as an example, behold, your people raise a clamor thereat (in ridicule)! And they say, Are our gods best, or he? This they set forth to you, only by way of disputation: Yea, they are a contentious people [43 Zukhruf 57-58]. When Hars ibn Omer Fahri heard this, he flew into a rage and shouted: ‘O, Allāh. If what the Prophet (s) said is true, then let stones shower upon me from the sky or let a chastisement descend upon me’ The Prophet (s) said: “O, Hars repent forthwith or leave my presence this very instant”. This was because as long as Hars remains in the presence of the Prophet (s) no chastisement will descend [8 Anfaal 33]. Hars called for his horse, mounted it and trotted away. The moment he crossed the city limits, a stone fell from the sky and smashed his head to smithereens. The Prophet (s) told the hypocrites who were present: ‘Go and see the fate of your friend and find out how his prayer is answered’. Allāh then revealed: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيم وَاسْتَفْتَحُوا وَخَابَ كُلُّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ {15} [‘But they sought the decision and result [there and then]; frustration is the lot of every powerful obstinate transgressor’ [14 Ibrahim 15] THE SECOND INCIDENT In Majmā’ul Bayan, it is narrated that Imam al Sādiq (s) said: “At Ghadeer-e Qom when the Prophet appointed and nominated Imam Ali (s) as his heir and successor by saying: ‘Of whomsoever I am the Guardian, this Ali (s) here is also his guardian’. Numan bin Hars Fahri was enraged to hear this. He told the Prophet (s): ‘You asked us to attest to the Unicity of Allāh, we complied. You asked us to testify that you are Allāh’s Messenger, we testified. You commanded us to do Jihad, we obliged. You ordered us to fast during Ramazan, we readily agreed. You asked us to establish Salaat and give Zakaath, we accepted. After all this, you are still not content till you imposed upon us this lad [Imam Ali (s)] as Authority over us. Is this from you or from Allāh? ’ The Prophet (s) replied: ‘This indeed is from Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic’ Numan said: ‘If indeed what he [the Prophet (s)] says is the truth from You, then let a stone fall upon me from the sky and kill me instantly’ Numan had scarcely finished his words, when a stone fell from the sky, pierced his skull and killed him instantly. At that moment it was revealed: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيم سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ {1}لِلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ {2} [70:1] A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall-[70:2] The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,
