DOWN MEMORY LANES General elections of 1967 I was posted as Asstt Professor in Government College, Barwani, MP. According to the provision, the chief election officer can assign election duty to the employees of other government departments. I was assigned the duty of presiding officer for conducting poll at a polling booth. The booth was in a small village 3 kilometers away. Our polling party of 5 members collected the election material from the election office two days in advance of the polling date. There were no electronic voting machines but steel ballot boxes. A bullock cart was hired by the election office for our transportation to the polling booth. The polling was peaceful and closed at 5:00 pm. Our polling party was the first to report, to deposit the sealed ballot box and to return the election material at the election office. But there was nobody at the election office, because they did not expect a polling party would report within 45 minutes of closing of the poll.
