DOWN TO EARTH: Celebrity Saints. This week we’ve got a couple of great saints…literally great, Albert the Great & Gertrude the Great! Albert the Great is the patron saint of, amongst other things, medical technicians, schoolchildren and theology students. So when you see a guy in a brown coat adjusting your heart monitor when you’re in hospital, he’s got his very own patron saint! I only mention Getrude the Great ‘cos it’s such a cool name! She’s the patron saint of nuns. I got kinda confused by reading about St. Leopold. He’s got several names: Leopold the Good, or the Valiant…or The Saint. Why the last one? I would have thought St. Leopold kinda tells you he’s a saint without adding it on at the end! Even more confusing, he’s the patron saint of Lower Austria, AND Upper Austria! Why not just, of Austria??? Also this week we have St. Margaret’s Day – Queen of Scotland and a huge influence, even to this day, on the character of our nation. She’s the patron saint of large families, queens and widows.
