DP130092582 on 07/18/13 at 3:21am, late shift officers responded to an aggravated assault with shots fired in the 300 block of S. Barton. The description was a white male on a Harley Davidson that lived near Barton. The stolen report was taken from the 400 block of S. Harris moments later. At one point Officer J. King observed a Harley Davidson as it jetted away from him near Taft and Washington Streets. Thinking this was the same armed suspect from the shots fired run, he gave chase. He caught up to the cycle with a white male riding. The cycle fled up an alley near Taft and Ray Streets where Officer King could not safely travel. The cycle came out of the alley and the chase continued north on Fleming to eastbound Bertha where the suspect struck a mailbox. The suspect then drove off the roadway between a fence and the steep embankment of the railroad tracks where he got the cycle hung up next to a residence in the 300 block of S. Barton. He fled on foot east with Officer King right behind him. The suspect dropped the handgun and ran east onto Wisher where he stole a 2000 Ford Escort. After stealing the Ford, he fled south on Wisher towards Washington Street. Officer J. Newlin was northbound on Wisher when the Ford, travelling dark, nearly hit him head on. The suspect drove up into a yard to get around Officer Newlin. He continued to flee in total darkness and struck Officer A. Chappell head on at Washington Street. The suspect, James Tate WM 31 fled on foot once again. Officer Chappell gave chase and tased the suspect about 30 yards east of the intersection on Washington Street. Tate was apprehended without further incident. Officer Chappell was taken by Sgt. Kibbey to U.S. Health Works for checkout of sore neck and left knee. Officer King twisted his left ankle and will not seek medical attention. The motorcycle was stolen but the handgun was not reported stolen. The suspect was arrested for 2 counts of Vehicle Theft, 35FAA, 2 counts of Resist Fleeing, Criminal Recklessness with a Vehicle and Leaving the scene of two accidents.
