DPOC Members, Recently, we were asked to support and promote Race for the Rescues. As a leadership team, we respectfully declined for this year. The following, our response to their statement, was made by our club founder, Stephen Terry.... All dogs must be spay/neutered to enter the park? That doesnt meet our mission statement. While we support adoption as the best option to find your new best friend, and we also understand the spay/neuter is the best way of combating euthanasia rates in shelters, there is no way that we will support an event that a dog on a leash must be spay/neutered to participate with its owner. Not everyone feels as we do, and while we cant stand the AKC as they profit drastically and support puppy mill operations the fact remains that we as an organization are here to get all dogs out in public with their owners socializing and not just those that are spay/neuter. Are you going to be checking for spay scars if the dogs show up? Race for the Rescues is a noble and worthy cause that we have supported and help promote in the past, however with that stipulation we can not support or promote such an event. We hope you understand. On a personal, yet related note, I attended a highly promoted Halloween pet costume parade last Sunday. As typical with most events, some pets were not spay/neutered. Since all pets were on LEASHES, and knowledgeable owners adjusted accordingly (leaving the rest to do their own typical thing), even though there were a few barks and growls between dogs (normal behavior regardless of spay/neutered status), NO fights broke out amongst them. Discriminating against one group of animals due to their spay/neutered status, or breed (like with bully breeds, for which we actively support), is fundamentally wrong. We stand true to our calling (that applies to ALL dogs), which promotes bonding between PARENTS and theirs PAWS in fun activities, while advocating for Dog Welfare. (Leo)
