Written from the location of the confluence of the rivers making the mighty Nile, her vantage point inspires reflections on the Nubian and Islamic legacies in East Africa and on more recent colonial and cultural connections. This is a woman’s quest to delve into and reconcile the inner and outer polarities and contradictions of life. The book shows particularly a perceptive understanding of both the Sudanese and Eritrean predicaments, expressed with much empathy. I read it in one sitting but it must be read again to fully absorb the meaning and rhythm of the chosen words. The book is for all poetry lovers but it would resonate particularly with readers having an East African connection.
