DR. COUTO ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT~ Dear GHWP Constituents and Supporters, After 30 years of dedicated service to the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Veterinary Medical Center and College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University, Dr. Guillermo Couto has announced his intent to retire effective August 31, 2013. Dr. Couto is well known and respected throughout the world by veterinarians and animal owners. He has made immense contributions to our College, Veterinary Medical Center and the veterinary profession through his teaching, research, clinical service, and outreach. His founding of the Greyhound Health and Wellness Program and the Animal Blood Bank will be wonderful legacies representing his passion, tireless commitment, and contributions. Dr. Couto earned his DVM in 1976 from Buenos Aires University in Argentina, where he was employed prior to entering an oncology residency at the University of California-Davis in 1981. Directly following completion of his residency in 1983, Dr. Couto was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Ohio State, where he established the Oncology/Hematology Service. This preceded his board certifications as a Diplomate American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (internal medicine) in 1986 and Chartered Diplomate ACVIM (oncology) in 1987. The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State named him a full member starting in 1987. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1995. Through the myriad of publications from his research and his presentations at numerous extension and continuing education events, Dr. Couto has become well respected within the profession and the animal-owning public. Dr. Couto founded and obtained funds for the Greyhound Health and Wellness Program (GHWP) at Ohio State. The GHWP is focused on advancing the health and well-being of Greyhounds through research, education, clinical care, and outreach. He has a special place in his heart for the Greyhound and the GHWP, and through this he and others have provided specialized outreach and education for owners and veterinarians; a website containing current health and research information; a list-serv for veterinarians treating retired racing Greyhounds; a scientific and continuing education conference on Greyhound health; and medical care, spay/neuter, dentistry and other specialized care such as oncology and orthopedics. The program has flourished under his direction, and through his efforts and the generosity of donors nationwide, the program has been able to help restore health to numerous Greyhounds with cancer and other ailments. Dr. Couto willingly shared his knowledge and clinical expertise with other faculty, residents, staff and students at Ohio State, and they have participated extensively in providing leading-edge veterinary medical care to Greyhounds for many years. Dr. Couto also founded “The Gift of Life” Animal Blood Bank Program at the Ohio State Veterinary Medical Center that provides resources, education and consultation regarding transfusion medicine in dogs and cats, and provides blood products for ill or injured animals. It has grown to become a local, regional and national resource for veterinary practices that require donor blood or blood products. Over the years, Dr. Couto’s funded research includes awards of over three million dollars from over 50 agencies as either the principal investigator or co-investigator. His research interests have included clinical hematology, metastatic neoplasia, chemotherapy, hemostasis, and Greyhound medicine. His scholarly contributions include over 150 book chapters, approximately 150 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, 130 reviews and abstracts, and numerous papers in proceedings, as well as other creative scholarly works. Most recently, Dr. Couto has focused his research on his passion for Greyhounds and has helped to advance knowledge about the unique characteristics and features of Greyhound physiology and medicine. He and his colleagues at Ohio State have contributed a substantial volume of information to the literature regarding Greyhound medicine. There have been over 30 scientific publications regarding Greyhounds in the last several years arising from work at Ohio State, representing a large number of the scholarly articles published on the subject. Dr. Couto has served as a reviewer of scientific manuscripts and on editorial review boards for numerous scientific journals. He currently serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Feline Medicine, Veterinary Clinical Pathology, Revista de la Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias (the official publication of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Tandil University, and Revista de AVEPA (the official publication of the Small Animal Veterinary Association in Spain). He has held leadership positions in many groups, including the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) as Chair of the Examination Committee, Program Co-Chair of the ACVIM Forum, and ad hoc member of the Board of Regents. Dr. Couto has served as the major advisor for over 10 graduate students (many of who have received awards for their clinical and research activities) a committee member for over 10 additional graduate students, and clinical advisor for 25 interns and residents, In addition he has served as advisor to numerous international faculty and graduate students. Many visitors to the Oncology and Hematology Services came to gain experience from Dr. Couto because of his international recognition in these fields. He has lectured locally, regionally, and internationally. He has had extensive teaching responsibilities in the curriculum, including lectures, laboratories, and clinical teaching, and is a respected and decorated educator. His excellence in teaching has earned him several awards, including but not limited to the Omega Tau Sigma Fraternity National Gamma Award for Distinguished Service to the Veterinary Profession twice; the Kansas State University Legends in Small Animal Internal Medicine Award; the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award; the OSU-CVM Clinical Teaching Award twice; the OSU Faculty Teaching Award; membership to the Academy of Teaching Excellence at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State since 1998; the 2000 British Small Animal Medical Association’s Bourgelat Award (“as the primary international recognition for really outstanding contributions to the field of small animal practice”); and most recently was the recipient of the 2012 Faculty Achievement Award from the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians. In addition to all of these contributions, Dr. Couto has been involved with several administrative and service responsibilities, including serving as the Head of the Oncology and Hematology service for several years and serving on over 20 committees and task forces. Dr. Couto is also involved in other groups outside of Ohio State, including the Affinity Veterinary Advisory Council and Scientific Advisory Board, and the Program Chair for Small Animal Medicine at the Southern European Veterinary Conference. Dr. Couto has had a distinguished career in veterinary medicine and has demonstrated excellence in academic endeavors, including teaching, research, service, and outreach, as well as organized veterinary medicine. In addition, he provides consultation via e-mail and phone inquiries on a regular basis. He has developed local, regional, national and international reputations for excellence. The Animal Blood Bank and the Greyhound Health and Wellness Program have become local, regional, and national resources. Dr. Couto considers one of his most notable accomplishments were to help instruct his daughter Kristen in the classroom and clinics, and to teach his son Jason in the classroom and labs during their veterinary education.
