DR LAZAROUS CHAKWERA CANT FOOL THE NORTH Now we don’t know what kind of handover notes that Honorable JZU Tembo, the fellow who handpicked the erratic Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to lead the MCP to its demise. But one thing is certain; he must have left him a dossier of unexplained murders and other crimes against humanity that the MCP government committed against the people of the north during its reign of terror. Late Orton Ching’oli Chirwa, Kanyama Chiume, The Chisiza Brothers among others were victims of the campaign of terror that the MCP through its paramilitary wing, The Malawi Young Pioneers and the Red Shirted and Khaki clad Youth Leaguers unleashed on Northeners for trying to express themselves just like Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is today. For so many years the Northern Region has been lagging behind in terms of development amenities and social services. Even as a preacher; Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera fought for nobody’s rights when Malawians including Northerners were fighting for multiparty democracy. And apart from inconsequential whistle stop tours, his predecessor retired JZU Tembo was equally aloof to the plight of the northern region and it is not surprising at all that Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is using the same abusive script of political manipulation. Allowing Chakwera to get away with his poor judgment and manipulations will mean allowing him to continue with his predecessors’ dictatorial traits that are already manifesting themselves in his conduct and utterances. Just as Democracy can neither be equated to elections nor can it be equated to the will of the ruler. The uninformed behavior of people like Chakwera who want to exercise power must be subjected to some checks and balances before May 20, 2014: otherwise there is only one party in this country that has the morality to talk about amassing votes in the northern region.
