DR NITHYASREE MAHADEVAN: Smt D K Pattammal’s third generation, her grand daughter Smt Nithyasree Mahadevan, is definitely a chip of the old block. Being a very vibrant and extraordinary singer endowed with a very powerful voice with an amazing range, Nithyasree used to accompany her grand mother Smt D K Pattammal in the higher octaves when she was only in her teens and DKP an octogenarian. Again a very rare combination of two generations, the performances, though were very few in number were very striking and memorable ones still lingering in the minds of rasikas. Being one of the foremost musicians amongst the present generation singers, she has the stamp and grandeur of her grand mother’s music with also a degree of individuality in the manodharma aspect. Smt Nithyashree remembers crying to her grandma when there was an adverse remark that she does not sing exactly the way Smt DKP sings. Her dear grand mother patted on her shoulder and remarked, “Music is not mimicry. You should sing whatever comes to your instinct and mind. Be true to yourself. A carbon copy of Pattammal is not a requirement”. What a powerful analysis and a convincing advice! She always sings the favorite pieces of her grand mother with extreme pride and utmost humility. Dr Nithyasree Mahadevan in the lines of her role model and mentor Smt D K Pattammal believes in innovation within the boundaries of tradition. Again Smt D K Pattammal is indeed unique in having her legacy continued through her blood relation, her grand daughter.
