DRAYTON DISPLAYS DETERMINATION AS SASHA CELLS JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP GETS UNDERWAY The first three of seven opponents each suffered defeat to defending National Junior Chess Champion Anthony Drayton when the SASHA CELLS 2013 National Junior Championship began over the weekend at Olympic House, Georgetown. Drayton exhibited his determination to retain the title as he crushed Rashad Hussain, his first opponent to fall, followed by Haifeng Su, former National Junior Champion and Davion Mars, his third adversary on the chess board. Drayton later explained to Shiv Nandalall, President of the Guyana Chess Federation that Mars was the toughest of the three and he does not foresee any of his remaining four opponents posing a threat to his title. Meanwhile, lone female participant Sheriffa Ali scored a victory over her male counterpart Roberto Neto and drew her match with her older brother Saeed. However, she lost to Davion Mars in a tense struggle. With four more rounds to go, the defending junior champion, who holds a FIDE rating of 1801 will face Roberto Neto, Saeed and Sheriffa Ali and Omar Britton Grant. The point standings after three of seven rounds read: Anthony Drayton three, Haifeng Su, Roberto Neto and Davion Mars two each, Sheriffa Ali one and a half, Saeed Ali one, Rashad Hussain half a point and Omar Britton Grant still to score. The fourth round is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon (October 23) at the same venue and the championship will wrap up next weekend.
