DRDO at a Glance India today has a proud position among the elite nations in the world, being: One of the 4 countries to have multi-level Strategic Deterrence Capabilities; One of the 5 countries to have its own Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) program; One of the 6 countries to have developed a nuclear- powered Submarine; One of the 7 countries to have developed its own Main Battle Tank (MBT), an indigenous 4th gen Combat Aircraft and One of select few countries to have its own Electronic Warfare & multi-range Radar program. All these and many more world class weapon systems, platforms and military equipment are based on cutting edge technologies developed by DRDO (drdo.gov.in ), the Defence Research Development Organization led to production by DRDO, taking along Indian public and private sector industries, including SMEs, these products and technologies have led to overall industrial growth in this crucial segment of defence industries; taking the share of indigenous content of items approved for acquisition by our armed forces to over 55%. Many of these technologies have found civil applications too and are benefiting the civil society. The production value of systems based on DRDO technologies that have been inducted / approved for induction into services during the past decade (excluding strategic systems) stands at over Rs 1, 70, 000 crore. In its journey from a state of near zero knowledge or technology base and a non-existent industrial base in post independent era, when even nuts, bolts and sewing needles had to be imported, DRDO has been moving in close association with the armed forces, academic institutions, research organizations and industries, to achieve its prime objective of building indigenous capabilities and self-reliance in cutting edge defence technologies. DRDO is the R&D wing of Ministry of Defence, Govt of India, with 55 years of innovation and R&D, a vision to empower India with cutting-edge defence technologies and a mission to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems, while equipping the armed forces with state-of-the-art weapon systems and equipment. It has led the design, development and production of state-of- the-art weapon systems, military equipment and soldier support systems, in accordance with requirements laid down by the three Services. DRDOs pursuit of self- reliance and successful indigenous development and production of strategic systems and platforms such as Agni and Prithvi series of missiles, nuclear powered submarine-Arihant, light combat aircraft- Tejas, multi-barrel rocket launcher “Pinaka”, missile based air defence system “Akash”, a wide range of radars and electronic warfare systems, etc. have given quantum jump to Indias military might, generating effective deterrence and providing crucial leverage. DRDO is headed by Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri (SA to RM), who is also the Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Director General DRDO. Dr. DS Kothari, the eminent scientist and educationist was the first to head the Organization which is currently headed by Shri Avinash Chander. The SA to RM is supported by Director Generals (Technology Clusters) and CCR&Ds (Chief Controllers Research & Development). Each DG (Technology Clusters) heads a specific technology cluster of laboratories, whereas CCR&Ds look after specific corporate functions. DRDO has established 57 laboratories, establishments and work centres besides exhaustive infrastructure for design, development, testing and comprehensive evaluation of weapon systems and military equipment. DRDOs accomplishments are result of hard work and dedicated efforts of a relatively small work force comprising about 7500 DRDS scientists together with about 20,000 technical and support personnel. Indeed, this committed work force being its most valuable asset, DRDO lays great emphasis on their selection process, post induction training and career long professional development, providing an excellent meritorious career. Competent manpower is inducted into DRDO through Recruitment & Assessment Centre (rac.gov.in) through several schemes such as All India DRDO Scientist Entry Test (SET), Annual Campus Talent Search, selection as scientist from candidates with fresh PhD under the ROSSA scheme, online selection for NRIs and selection of scientists under Lateral Entry Scheme. “Balasya mulam vigyanam”, i.e., “The source of strength is Science”. It is Science that drives the nation in peace and war. DRDO has firm determination to make the nation strong and self reliant in terms of Science and Technology especially in the field of military technologies
