DRESS CODE POLICY Section 4.2 of the DLSU Student Handbook - TopicsExpress

DRESS CODE POLICY Section 4.2 of the DLSU Student Handbook 2012-2015 provides that: The University recognizes the right of students to come to school dressed according to their individual taste. However, they are encouraged to use attires that consider the educational character of the University and the sensibility of other members of the academic community. Dressing appropriately is a virtue which the University would like to cultivate among students, thus the University reserves the right to call the attention of students who dress inappropriately.” Given the Catholic nature of De La Salle University, Lasallian students are encouraged to practice the values of respect for one’s self, decency, and appropriateness through their campus attire. The University also sees itself as the training ground for the students’ professional career, where certain standards of dressing are required for employment. Thus, the following guidelines on campus attire form part of the students’ holistic Lasallian educational experience: 1. Campus attire should be decent and modest. Some extremes are not acceptable, including: a) All tube tops/sando (e.g. camisole, halter-tops, racer back, spaghetti-strap, T-back shirt) worn without vest, cardigan, bolero or blazer b) Backless tops that expose the back below the bust line. c) Cleavage –baring tops d) See-through tops and/or bottoms where the undergarment can be seen e) All tops showing midsection while standing / walking 2. All shorts, skirts and dresses must have a hemline not above the tip of the student’s longest finger plus one inch in a standing upright position with arms resting on the side. In addition, P.E. / sports / athletic shorts may not be worn inside classrooms / seminar rooms / auditorium 3. As a sign of respect, caps, bonnets and hats should not be worn inside classrooms / seminar rooms / auditorium/offices/chapels 4. On hair dye, students should not sport extreme hair colors (e.g. red, purple, blue etc.) 5. Open-toe footwear should have either a back-strap / sling-back or heel of at least 1 inch. Footwear with wedged heels of at least 1 inch are allowed. This provision does not apply at E. Razon Sports Complex. Students with medical condition must immediately proceed to the University Clinic to secure clearance for exemption, without which, the same shall not be considered as an excuse for apprehension. 6. Clothing with pictures and/or statements that are contrary to the mission and the Catholic nature of De La Salle University is prohibited. 7. Faculty members may require their own in-class dress code policy provided that it is related, necessary, and reasonably relevant to their classes. This includes, but not limited to, the following cases: a) wearing of appropriate attire in laboratory classes and P.E. uniform for P.E. classes b) wearing of business attire during reports and other important class activities Part of the formation that the University would like the students to recognize is that they have to be responsible for their actions, and as such, should understand that there are consequences for non-compliance with the rules and regulations set forth by the University. In order to enforce the practice and formation of dressing appropriately, the Safety and Security Office (SSO) shall implement the Dress Code policy as students enter the gates of DLSU on a strictly “NO COMPLIANCE, NO ENTRY” policy. Continuing compliance with the dress code policy inside the campus shall be enforced by the Student Discipline Formation Office (SDFO) or Discipline Officers following the existing provisions on the sanctions on the Dress Code Policy. *As agreed upon by the Student Handbook Revision Committee (Student Handbook 2012-2015), the provisions of the Implementing Guidelines will be reviewed after one academic year of its implementation. Section 5.3.2.28 of the SH also states that “Second and succeeding violations of the Implementing Guidelines on the Dress Code is a MINOR OFFENSE”.
