DSEC ECO MR Tanker’s meteoric rise in marine transportation - TopicsExpress

DSEC ECO MR Tanker’s meteoric rise in marine transportation market The ECO MR Tanker designed by DSEC, an engineering subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in Busan, South Korea, received much critical acclaim for high fuel efficiency and environmentally-friendly design from many owners in the U.S. market. DSEC conducted the newest hull form optimization and model tests several times to develop the best hull form, moreover, has achieved the world’s best fuel efficiency as the 22.1 ton DFOC (Daily Fuel Oil Consumption), applying the MAN B&W G-type Slow-speed Engine of MDT and large propeller. In addition, DSEC is planning to apply the Energy Saving Device (PSS: Pre-Swirl Stator) to improve propulsion efficiency more than 3 percent. Now DSEC is working on the development of PSS, in cooperation with Pusan National University, and the estimated payback period of investment for the PSS is about in 2~3 years. In addition, the ECO MR Tanker is considered to satisfy the EEDI PhaseⅡand strict regulations of USCG, designed as high technology ‘LNG Ready’ to apply LNG Fuel System in the future. The LNG-Ready ship is suitable for retrofitting into an LNG propulsion ship in accordance with emission control limit and oil prices. And also it can control the percentage of a dual fuel. Besides, the ship will be the first to be equipped with the HiVAR device, which is a high-pressure fuel suppler. Moreover, when operating by LNG fuel, by reducing the DFOC to 19 ton, the fuel expenses will be saved about 30~35%. Along with this, the figures also will be decreased, SOx 90~95%, NOx 25~30% and CO2 20~25% respectively. Based on these effects, the ECO MR Tanker satisfied the efficiency and eco-friendliness at the same time. Based on the DSEC’s innovative design, NASSCO (National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Group of Houston, USA.) wrapped up a contract with APT (American Petroleum Tankers) for 4+4 ships of the ECO MR on 12th June 2013 and soon afterward, the DSEC is under formal contract to provide design and equipment package for NASSCO. Followed by the news of the DSEC’s contract, the DSEC is getting attention from many owners and it looks like there will be another news of contact in the very near future.
