DSF briefed teams ahead of six-nation football Cup Africa » Gambia Wednesday, April 16, 2014 The Discovery Sports Foundation (DSF), The Gambia, Tuesday briefed teams ahead of its upcoming six-nation football tournament schedule to take place on the 9th May, 2014. The games will be played at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda and the Serekunda East mini-stadium respectively and will bring together teams from Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal and Guinea. Among other things, the aim of the competition is to promote and encourage grassroots football development in the country and to discover young talented Gambians and non-Gambians hence to foster unity among the youths in the country through sports as well as to develop players for future careers. Speaking at the briefing, Oladipo Olawomo, director and project coordinator described football as a sport with both national and international interest of focus for the government and private bodies. He added that this project is a great stride and a leading role in shaping a better future for youths, the country and as part of government’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). He stated that the expected results are to facilitate and increase opportunities for youth participation in grassroots football; create a room to build unity and friendship among the six nations in the Gambia; create an avenue to have a sense of belonging and also to discover young talented footballers and to recommend them to foreign clubs through their talents and help the players in each teams to stay focused in their football career so as not to lose hope for the betterment of their future. According to him, it is recommended that this proposal is read and deliberated upon by all stakeholders to ascertain its viability and workability in a bid to encourage and improve football development among the six nations in the country and also to further publicize all the services being rendered to youth in sports and education, also helping the home based to identify their chosen career by the Sierra Leone Consulate Office and its Management. Olawomo disclosed that 25 players plus officers will represent each team. The participating teams are: Whales Football Club- Nigeria; Dolphin Football Club-Nigeria; ECOWAS Football Club1- Sierra Leone; ECOWAS Football Club2-Sierra Leone, Liberian Football Club- Liberia; Raptim Football Club- The Gambia; Royal Football Club-Nigeria; Guinea Football Club-Guinea; Fireforce Football Club, The Gambia; Tallinding Football Club, The Gambia and Senegal Football Club- Senegal. For his part, Ibrahim Akinpelu, chairman of DSF, said the Discovery Sports Foundation, the Gambia is a youth, sports and education oriented non-governmental organisation operating in the Gambia since August 2006. He noted that the organisation has deemed it fit to say that since 2006 to date, it has organised seven-a-side football tournament for the youth in the country. Author: Awa Gassama
