DSS allegation against APC baseless – Lawyer By Joe Nwankwo, Assistant Editor, Abuja A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and constitutional lawyer, Tunji Abayomi, has described the allegation by the Directorate of State Security (DSS) that the party tried to hack into the database of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as baseless. Abayomi in a press statement shortly after the deputy director in charge of Public Relations of the DSS accused the APC of cloning PVCs, dismissed the allegation and described it as “hog wash.” He charged the leadership of the party to warn the DSS to remind itself of its responsibility to the nation’s constitution and the liberties of her citizens and institutions, above its commitment to a government, which may even be against the people. He said every Nigerian who believes there is a difference between a government and a nation must be disturbed about the poor quality of presentation by DSS on its invasion of the APC data house. “Now that APC dismisses the allegation as worthless, we hope the DSS will prove its allegation outside the press conference in the case DSS claims to have charged to Court. “DSS made allegation that APC has vast information on hacking. This averment is just as useless as the allegation about intent. Any one who wants to know about hacking or possibility of hacking especially from an opponent needs only to sensibly access hacking software free download in the Internet. There is nothing special about hacking except that any system that desires to preserve its database must, I repeat, must know every dawn thing about hacking to protect its database from a potential hacker like APC would presume PDP to be. “All the stories by DSS public relations woman about passport photographs in envelopes means little. Thousands of APC members submitted passport pictures pending the availability of membership forms. The hype about these issues means nothing but over demonstration of nothing. How, for example, can APC have protected its membership database from hacking by DSS, Police, and PDP, all of which have demonstrated much hatred for APC without a deep knowledge of hacking. “DSS allegation of inflated party membership registration, registration of membership of Security Services etc. also amount to nothing. “Are there no underage registrants in PDP? Are there no members of Security Forces registered in PDP? When has such registration become an issue deserving the interest of DSS? And how would APC clean its registration list assuming it is not alright without a database? “And when did party membership registration turn to a crime warranting the deep interest of a national security body like the DSS. What at any rate has the membership of APC got to do with voting or voting population for or against APC or PDP in any election? “It is noted that DSS surprisingly did not claim to have found INEC documents in the data office of APC, did not claim to have received any complaints of threat of APC from INEC. In view of the above we can only conclude that the DSS is only executing the plan to deliver Lagos or Nigeria to the government in power by all means. In my view, the best answer to DSS is to simply dismiss the allegation as “hog wash” as APC did. “But APC should go further to warn DSS to remind itself of its responsibility to the nation’s constitution and the liberties of her citizens and institutions above its commitment to a government, which may even be against the people at any rate,” Abayomi said.
