Da Story From humble beginnings 24 years ago on Sapodilla Bay, the Fools Regatta has grown into the Summer Festival of the year. Originally the April Fools Regatta, as time went by it became increasingly difficult to run a growing event during the height of tourist season. So we settled on the mid-June date in the mid 90’s, and also settled on being named simply “the Fools Regatta”. And the name suits our light-hearted approach to racing. The Regatta features two divisions sailing on two separate race courses. The smaller Laser Picos and Hobie Waves race right off of Regatta Central in the Bight Park, and the bigger boats race a course than runs down the length of Grace Bay. Historically, large boats would sail up to Pine Cay where one crew member had to race ashore, drink a libation, get back aboard and race back to Grace Bay. Caicos Sloops joined the fun for the first time in ’93, and on good years we have had as many as 10 locally built sloops on the start line. The small boat division (racing in the Bay) will showcase an Inter-School Race, a Resort Challenge Race and the Governor’s Cup…all promising thrills, spills and ultimately bragging rights. There is an opportunity for all Regatta patrons with basic sailing skills to get out on the water. We are reviving the Great Raft Race this year and entries are flying in (Fortis was first among companies to step up to the plate and 8 schools have also entered). For land-lubbers, there is a Tug-O-War competition and the Provo Primary Steel Drum band to entertain. Sonia and her TCIFA footballers will be running the Bar ‘N Grill, Ms. Fulford will be serving her Crab ‘N Rice and other TI delicacies and Bambarra will be offering a taste of their home grown product. All of the above to benefit the Youth programs of the TCI Sailing Association and the TCI Football Association. So c’mon down to the Bight Park on June 14th and support many worthy causes while having fun in the sun!!
