Daddys Newspaper Article For This Week: Confidence in God and confidence in the Holy Scriptures go hand in hand. Our faith in the Deity of Jesus Christ rests in a proper understanding of the Scriptures. If Jesus spoke and did only those things that the Father instructed Him, then the words given by Christ are the words of God (John 5:36;12:48-50). If we believe that God is all-wise, how then can we say that He has spoken to us instruction to obey that we cannot understand? Does God have an eternal purpose that includes mankind? Yes! (Ephesians 3:8-11; 1:9-11). Can we understand what the will of God for us is? Yes! (Ephesians 5:17). Is there a pattern that we have been given by God for obedience in worship and service? Yes! “Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13). Note also that obedience has a “form” – Romans 6:1-17. If we follow the same pattern in our “building”, will our obedience produce the same product in our relationship with God? Will there be conformity in primary obedience and in living in Christ? If so, then why are some, even brethren, speaking against what they call patternism? How can the world recognize Christians if their standards are various and even in conflict with one another? Confidence in the teaching of the New Testament and submissive obedience to it produce the same manner of life everywhere in the world. Hence, one who becomes a Christian in America and one who becomes a Christian in China are building by the same pattern. Their morals, ethics, worship, service to others, and hope toward God will be the same. This is reality because of confident obedience to one divine standard of conduct – the Holy Scriptures. If we handle aright the word of truth, we can walk together in Christ. (Amos 3:3). Gilbert Alexander Southside Church of Christ
