Dagon is a 2001 Spanish horror film directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli. Despite the title, the plot is actually based on H.P. Lovecrafts novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1936) rather than his earlier short story Dagon (1919). The narrator is a student of folkore on a sightseeing tour of New England. He learns of the coastal town of Innsmouth, which suffered an epidemic and rioting in the last century and then fell into such decline that it is no longer shown on maps. He visits Innsmouth, and discovers that finds the inhabitants have a repulsive appearance, the whole town reeks of rotting flesh, and most houses are boarded up and derelict. An elderly local drunk tells him that in the late 1700s, some whalers from Innsmouth discovered a South Seas cult that practiced human sacrifice and worshipped immortal undersea creatures. The creatures agreed to supply the sailors with an infinite supply of gold if, in return, the sailors brought the creatrues back to Innsmouth and worshipped them. The price proved too high for the townsfolk, who revolted (the epidemic and riots) and defeated by the creatures. Surviving residents agreed to join the cult. Thats just the beginning of this story of tentacles, bestiality, inbreeding, old gods, and evil.
