Daily Devotion by Raul Ries THURSDAY March 13, 2014 God’s Chastening 1 Samuel 4:8 Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. The Philistines were heathens and they did not know who the Israelites worshipped. They worshipped Dagon, a wooden idol and they knew the other heathen nations worshipped other gods—other idols—but they did not know the One, True, Living God. I find it interesting, although they did not have newspapers, television or computers; the Philistines still knew who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. They did not know it was Jehovah God, but they knew it was the god or gods of Israel. They knew He was powerful and they were very afraid. Think about it. They had their god, Dagon, but they recognized the God of Israel was greater than their god. They had heard stories of what God did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and they knew their god was no match; still they came against the children of Israel. Why? It was God who brought the Philistines against Israel. God would use this heathen nation to chastise Israel and to accomplish His purpose and plan. He was going to remove Eli and his sons, while chastening Israel at the same time. God does the same thing with us. If we do not want to listen to God and we want to do our own thing, God will allow us, but there will be a chastening. God loves us; He will chasten us, to get us back on the right track. Chastening is simultaneous wrath and mercy. ~R. T. Kendall~
