Daily Devotional “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” - Matthew 5:6 Happiness Equals Feeling Satisfied Mick Jagger screamed for a whole Baby Boomer generation, “I can’t get no satisfaction.” I doubt he ever did, because I doubt he ever hungered or thirsted for righteousness. It’s very difficult for most of us to have any idea about the sense of intense hunger and intense thirst that Jesus is talking about. This type of hunger and thirst is hard for Americans to grasp because very few Americans are wondering if they will have enough to eat. The kind of hunger Jesus is talking about is an obsessive hunger and an incredible thirst. But not for physical food. For righteousness. And righteousness is not something we achieve. It’s something we receive, and it’s only received through faith in Jesus Christ. When we receive this righteousness from God through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit. Once we receive Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us a hunger for God’s Word. God’s Word teaches us how to stay right with God. The more we trust and obey God’s Word, the more satisfaction we receive. This is what Jesus means when He says, “Blessed (or happy) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” So, if you’re like ‘ole Mick (and man is he old) and can’t get no satisfaction, trust Jesus’ way and be satisfied at last.
