Daily Devotional for September 15, 2014 When I was in 8th - TopicsExpress

Daily Devotional for September 15, 2014 When I was in 8th grade, we lived in Red Oak, Texas. This was back in the days when the United Methodist Church had Sunday night services. Every Sunday night, when the service was over, my family would drive from the small town of Red Oak, down a dark farm to market road, to Lancaster for a late supper of hamburgers and French fries. One Sunday, after eating hamburgers, we were driving back to Red Oak on this dark farm to market road. We were far out in the country. There was no ambient light on the horizon to distract from the sky. It was a cloudless night and the black sky was filled with stars which seemed to stretch from one end of the horizon to the other. It was a beautiful sight I hope to never forget. As I sat in the back seat of our car looking up at the stars, I began to think about how big the universe must be and how our sun was so much smaller than most stars. It dawned upon me that there were an infinite number of planets out in space and that on our planet; I was just one person amongst billions in a universe that stretched on forever. I realized that as far as the cosmos was concerned, I was truly insignificant. I began to feel very small and afraid. As I continued to stare at the stars, a terrible feeling began to gnaw at the pit of my stomach. Suddenly a peace washed over me and I understood that, even though by the standards of the universe, I was less than a grain of sand, in the eyes of God I really mattered. This was the first time I remember understanding the big picture. God loves us. As small and insignificant as we are, God cares so much that he chose to do whatever was necessary to save us. God’s love is what gives us worth. Never doubt that you matter. You really do. Your boss may treat you like a servant. Your spouse may take you for granted. Your children may see you as nothing but an inconvenience. That is not what God sees. When God looks at you, he sees a precious creation that he will love for all eternity. This is what Jesus is talking about when he says, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him won’t perish but will have eternal life. God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:16-17 CEB God has paid a price for you. Never doubt that you matter. I pray your day is filled with joy. Tom Robbins
