Daily Dose of Gratitude: March 11th, 2014: Im uber grateful for when people and the communities they create come together to (figuratively and literally) pick up broken fragments of their lives to create a new wholeness. As today marks the 3rd anniversary of the extensive Japanese tsunami which led to the Fukushima meltdown and the 10th anniversary of the Madrid train bombings in Spain, perhaps we could use a reminder on picking up from brokenness. Below is an excerpt from an e-mail I received today from a group, Eden Vigil, working on cultivating resilient communities from a Christian perspective: Women of Onagawa, Japan who have been displaced by the tsunami are able to find employment at Megumi, a project initiated by ReachGlobal missionaries. The women make jewelry from shards of pottery that have been broken and scattered by the tsunami. They take old kimonos and create new textile products which they sell locally or abroad, but which they also highlight as metaphors of Christs ability to beautifully restore the broken and the torn. The team writes: As we walk alongside people, it is truly important to see both people and community as a whole. As the long-term recovery process continues, people need livelihood, dignity, hope, and restoration from past wounds. We hope that Megumi will be a place where women are welcomed in as beautiful individuals loved by God, into a safe community. We hope that by learning how to make things, and making beautiful things out of old kimonos, that it would be symbolic of how there can be new life born out of the old, that there is a way forward. Our vision is that Megumi (meaning grace, or abundance) will truly flow amongst us and out of us, impacting the workers families and the community at large. Go Megumi and heres to all of us as we find that strength in our own broken times...:-)
