Daily Lenten Reflections by the Dominican Family Offered by the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 2014 By: Fr. Thomas Schaefgen, O.P. New Orleans, LA It probably ought to strike us as odd that Peter, James and John were very much afraid when Jesus was transfigured before them. But if we look more closely, we see that its not the transfiguration itself that frightens them--in fact, Peter is elated to see Moses and Elijah with Jesus. Actually, the cloud, the shadow, and the voice are what frighten them. That voice and the response of the apostles are indicative of only one thing in Scripture: the divine presence. So, perhaps whats more surprising is Jesus response: Rise, and do not be afraid. Jesus and any Jew would know that when God shows up you drop, cover your eyes, and worship. Yet, he tells them to do the very opposite. It is only through Jesus Christ that we may have confidence before the awesome mystery and majesty that is God the Father. Only in hearing his words of encouragement can we joyfully rise to greet the Father, rather than cowering in our misery and shame. For this reason Christ is our hope and our joy! -- opsouth.org/lenten-reflection-by-friar-thomas-schaefgen-o-p/
