Daily Manna 2014: Gods Displeasure with the Greedy Sunday 26, TEXT: ISAIAH 5:8-10 Key verse: “Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth” ( Isaiah 5:8). Part of the nature of the devil that sin brought into men is greed, a perennial striving to acquire excessive wealth and possessions. Of course, it is not sinful to get wealth, but wealth becomes an idol in the heart when a man’s heart is set on it. It is greed, when one is never satisfied with what he/she has. God is unhappy with those who increase wealth to themselves by unlawful means and those who love to monopolise possessions and are inconsiderate of others. The greedy are committed to getting possessions. Thus, their hearts are drawn away from God. They live to acquire wealth and nothing more. Hence, they cannot fulfill God’s purpose for their lives ( 1 Timothy 5:6). Christians whose hearts are inclined to getting quick riches are prone to evil ( 1 Timothy 6:9, 10). They are carnal and cannot please God ( Mark 10:24). God wants us to set our hearts on the things that have eternal value. All that a man spends for earthly life, he leaves behind at death but all that is invested with God are kept eternally. God is not pleased with the greedy. Therefore, He pronounces woe on them. Greed is foolishness. All of those whose hearts are sold to possessions will be disappointed because riches have “wings” and they will someday fly away. They will ultimately lose their souls to hell unlike those who please God by their righteous lifestyle and investment in divine service who will be rewarded in heaven. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: There is no sense in greed.
