Daily Manna: A Point Of No Return Monday 16, September 2013 TEXT: NAHUM 2:1-13 KEY VERSE: “Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard” (Nahum 2:13). In one of the local newspapers recently, it was reported that a wealthy middle-aged man driving his brand new car plunged into the river and died instantly. Yet, there are traffic sign posts on the highway to inform and to warn motorists of hazards on the road before the river. Curiously, the man died because of his apparent disregard for highway codes. Careful drivers heed safety codes but careless ones despise them to their regret and sorrow. A 7th century prophet of God, Nahum predicted the fall and the defeat of Nineveh, the great city of the Assyrian Empire that once humbled herself at the preaching of Jonah. The passage today reveals vividly the total fall and ruin of Nineveh where the Northern kingdom of Israel was destroyed and the inhabitants exiled. Habitual sinning and repeated backsliding despite warnings harden the heart and leave such people at the point of no return except there is genuine repentance. “As they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient (Romans 1:28). The city of Nineveh was endowed with much resources, yet they fell and were swept away by the Babylonian regiment at their careless hour. The consequence of a sinful lifestyle is great. Once caught in the downward spiral, no one can pull himself out. Sinners must trust God alone to put them on the path of escape. Believers must be watchful lest the devil takes advantage of their unguarded moments. He who carries explosives should be careful not to go near fire. If the devil finds a Christian unarmed, he rejoices that his hour of triumph has come. Nineveh with all her glory and wealth faded away. Beware and take heed, lest ye fall. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Repeated backsliding through sin is dangerous and deadly.
