Daily Manna DCLM TOPIC: He Deserves Our Praise. Saturday 28, June 2014 TEXT: PSALM 118:1-4 KEY VERSE: “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth forever” (Psalm 118:1). Some pilgrims left Plymouth, England, on September 6, 1620 on their way to the New World. For over two months, the 102 passengers braved the harsh elements of a vast storm-tossed sea. Finally, with firm purpose and a reliance on Providence, the cry of “land” was heard. Arriving in Massachusetts in late November, the pilgrims sought a suitable landing place. However, tragedy struck: nearly half died before spring, being unprepared for the starvation and sickness of a harsh New England winter. Yet, persevering in prayer, and assisted by helpful Indians, the rest of them reaped a bountiful harvest the following summer. The grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast, starting on December 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate with their Indian friends. Though they made more graves than huts, they set aside a day of thanksgiving. From our passage today, we are enjoined to give thanks unto God for all His mercies. There are many reasons for which to thank God: His mercies endure forever. It endures in His covenant of peace, His grace and loving-kindness, in sending Jesus Christ to die for our sins; the sure mercies and His wonderful promises which has continued notwithstanding the unworthiness of His people. Though He chastises us when we go astray, yet, His mercies endure forever. Those who want to focus on negatives will complain about everything: the weather, the economy, the attitude of people around them, their pains, failures and disappointments; and the general and unalterable vicissitudes of life. But to be truly happy, we must emphasise and highlight the goodness of the Lord in our lives. Henry Ward Beecher has said: “The unthankful heart …discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings”. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who focus on negatives always complain about everything.
