Daily Rant: Quarter-century is enough punishment for Pete Rose It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since a lifetime ban was imposed on Pete Rose by Major League Baseball. To me, it’s a shame that the all-time hits leader is not in the Hall of Fame. … or at least eligible for it. I understand what he did wrong. Pete Rose bet on baseball. I remember my dad explaining this to me when I was 12 years old in 1989. It seemed unforgivable at the time. But time has passed. After years of denial, Rose has admitted it. And he’s also apologized. That seems to be enough for admitted steroid users. Their names can show up on the ballot. They can be coaches, too. Rose isn’t allowed inside an MLB clubhouse. He can’t manage or coach. He can’t be inducted to Cooperstown for his playing merit. I think Major League Baseball is afraid to put Rose’s name on the ballot because they know he would get voted in. I think his chances are better than a PED user’s. Rose’s stats are incredible. His record 4,256 hits are 67 more than second-place Ty Cobb and 485 more than third-place Hank Aaron.
