Daily YoMo We are continuing today with more spinal opening work. Yoga is all about the breath. Well, we can use the breath to help open the spine. Constriction and lack of mobility in the thoracic spine can be due to a frozen diaphragm. The diaphragm enables your lungs to take in air so when it is locked down in a cramped position all day, you are decreasing the amount of air into the lungs as well as rounding the back, limiting mobility in the thoracic spine. Release the diaphragm and open the back with this simple breath exercise (or pranayama as we call it in yoga terms.) Ujjayi Breathing, also know as Victorious Breath, will work and unlock the diaphragm, as well as draw in energy and calmness to your being. Inhale, expand through the chest relaxing the diaphragm making room for the lungs to expand and fill with fresh oxygen. Feel the muscles of the back expand. Exhale, draw the belly in contracting the diaphragm pushing stale air out, lengthening through the spinal column. Find a comfortable position to sit keeping the spine straight. Prop your hips up on a cushion or chair to lift your hips above your knees. This makes it easier to keep the back straight without strain or pain. With the eyes closed, concentrate on the third eye point and visualize the spine becoming longer and stronger. https://youtube/watch?v=kQA_VQcJLv4
