Daily digest. Today we will tackle another aspect of pronounciation. When children are taught to read ( correctly ) they are focused on lower case letters of the alphabet and the phonetic sound of each of them. They then move on to combinations of letters as they progress. At no time are they told that a,t and h together acquire an invisible r. Nor does that same r appear when a and u are paired. For that matter, there is no r in play when a and s are teamed together. So all those south of Birmingham are getting it wrong. One takes a bath, not a barth. One might laugh, not laurgh. A car might be fast, not farst. Where does this annoying r come from? If it gets any worse, I think well have a civil war on our hands.
